Imagine scrolling through Pinterest. Pin after pin appears on your screen until one suddenly grabs your attention. It’s crisp, perfectly designed, and in exactly the right format. Why do some Pins instantly stand out while others disappear in the feed?
This Pinterest Pin Size Guide breaks down everything you need to know about the ideal Pinterest pin size, recommended image formats, and technical specifications that make the difference between an overlooked pin and a real click magnet.
Why Pinterest Pin Size Matters
Pinterest is a visual search engine. Users scroll fast, which means your Pins need to make an immediate impression. With the right Pinterest image size, your content can be displayed correctly on all devices, prioritized in the feed, attract more clicks and saves and, last but not least, it can stand out in a crowded visual landscape.
What Is the Best Size for a Pinterest Pin?
For years, the official recommendation was 1000 × 1500 px (2:3 ratio). As of early 2025, Pinterest no longer provides a specific recommended pin size.
From managing multiple accounts, I can say this: You need to test what works best in your niche. Some accounts thrive with standard 2:3 Pins, while others perform better with long, 9:16 “giraffe” Pins.
Keep an eye on your analytics and draw your own conclusions about which formats your audience responds to. A/B testing is your best friend here.
What Is an A/B Test on Pinterest? An A/B test compares two versions of a Pin—like a 2:3 and a 9:16 format—published under similar conditions. By comparing impressions, saves, and clicks, you can see which design and size delivers the best performance.
Under no circumstances should you publish pins smaller than 600 x 600 pixels, as they will be displayed too small, regardless of the device. Speaking of devices: Roughly 80% of Pinners now use the platform on mobile devices. Therefore, be sure to avoid horizontal pins so that they have the best user experience and your pins achieve the best possible success!

Video Pins
Pinterest recommends uploading videos in 1080 × 1920 px (9:16). Video Pins follow similar dimension rules as long Pins, but the strategy behind them differs—so I’ll cover that in a separate Pinterest image size guide. If you’d like that next, just tell me!
If you’ve been on Pinterest for a while, you might be wondering what about the Idea Pins. Idea Pins were merged into Video Pins in 2024 and do not exist on their own anymore.
Best File Formats for Pinterest Pins
Pinterest accepts BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and WEBP.
My recommendations:
- PNG for graphics (best quality, minimal pixelation)
- JPEG for photos
Since most Pins on Pinterest are designed graphics, PNG is usually the strongest choice.
Additional Pinterest Image Sizes You Should Know
Profile Picture Size
Your profile picture should be at least 165 x 165 pixels. I’ve personally uploaded profile pictures as large as 1080 x 1080 pixels—and they worked great!
The important thing is that it’s square and that your logo or image is centered. Just like on social media, it will be cropped into a circular shape.

Profile Cover Size
According to Pinterest, the optimal size for your profile cover is at least 800 x 450 pixels, and horizontal images with a 16:9 aspect ratio are recommended.
Currently, there are two types of profile covers: the old ones, which stretch across the top of the profile, and the new ones, which appear to the right of the profile.
For the old profile cover, the 16:9 aspect ratio is recommended; for the new one, the dimensions should be 800 x 450 pixels.

Board Cover Size
I didn’t include board covers above because they’re a special case. Originally, we only ever referred to the cover images of our boards when you went to the “Saved” overview. For this, we recommend square pins measuring 600 x 600 pixels.
However, since fall 2024, it’s been possible to add a board header to any board—though only in the Android or iOS app. Just like with the board cover, you must use an image from pins that have already been pinned.

To be transparent: I tested board headers when they launched, but stopped using them because they don’t impact user experience or performance.
Final Thoughts: Choosing the Right Pinterest Pin Size in 2026
Start with these recommended sizes:
- 1000 × 1500 px (standard 2:3)
- 1080 × 1920 px (long 9:16)
Then test, track analytics, and refine.
The right Pinterest Pin size helps your content stand out, look polished, and drive sustainable traffic long-term. Whether you’re a blogger, service provider, or small business owner, high-quality and well-sized Pins make a significant difference.
