Pinterest Business Account vs Personal

Pinterest offers two types of accounts: a personal account and a business account. But which one is right for you? In this post, I’ll explain the differences, the benefits, and how you can get the most out of Pinterest for your business.

Personal Account

personal account on Pinterest is intended for personal use. It’s designed for individuals who want to explore personal interests and gather inspiration.

With a personal account, you can:

  • Create unlimited boards
  • Save and organize pins
  • Follow other users and boards

This account is perfect if you use Pinterest purely for inspiration and don’t want to promote products or services.

Business Account

business account is meant for companies, brands, and freelancers who want to use Pinterest to market their products, services, or content. It inlcudes all the features of the personal account, plus:

  • Access to Pinterest Analytics with detailed insights into pin and board performance (e.g., reach, engagement, audience demographics).
  • The ability to use Rich Pins that display additional information directly on the pin (e.g. product details, recipes, article information).
  • Access to Pinterest Ads to run paid ad campaigns
  • The option to verify your website for improved visibility

If your goal is to generate organic traffic and increase your reach, a business account is the ideal choice. Want to get started right away? Here’s my guide on how to create and set up a Pinterest business account.

How much does a Pinterest business account cost?

A business account is free. You only incur costs if you choose to run paid advertising.

Convert personal account to business account

If you already have a personal account, you can easily convert it to a business account. Don’t worry – your pins, boards, and followers stay exactly the same. If your personal account already represents your business, converting it can make perfect sense. After all, why do double the work?

However, it does makes sense to delete or at least archive personal content that doesn’t align with your brand. The Pinterest algorithm needs clear signals to understand what your profile is about to be able to show your content to the right audience.

For example: I have a business profile connected to my sustainable lifestyle blog “Aennis Life”. On that account, I don’t pin anything related to Pinterest Management or Airtable Consulting. For that part of my business, I use a separate business account (this one). Mixing both would confuse the algorithm and might result in Pinterest showing my content to the wrong target group.

I also have a personal account in addition to my two business accounts. This way, personal and business-related content stay separated, and I don’t risk sending unclear signals to the algorithm.

Conclusion: Which account is right for you?

Use a personal account if you’re on Pinterest purely for inspiration. If your business is growing or you want to increase your reach intentionally, a business account is the better choice. You’ll benefit from valuable analytics tools and can use Pinterest as a strategic marketing channel.
