Pinterest is a powerful platform for boosting your visibility, driving traffic, and growing your business sustainably. But to unlock all its benefits – from analytics to website verification – you need the right foundation, a business account.
In this guide, I’ll show you how to make a Pinterest business account step by step. Whether you’re completely new to Pinterest or switching from a personal account, you’ll learn exactly how to create your Pinterest business account, how to set it up correctly, and what to pay attention to as you go.If you’re wondering “Is a Pinterest business account free?”, the answer is yes—and I’ll explain what that means for you as well.
Step 1: Create a Pinterest Business Account
When creating your Pinterest business account, you have two options: create a brand-new account or convert an existing personal account.
Option 1: You’re new to Pinterest
If you don’t have an account yet, you can create a business account right away.
- Visit pinterest.com/business/create.
- Follow the guided setup steps.
- Select “Business Account” during setup so you instantly get access to tools like analytics, ads, and domain verification.
Option 2: Convert an existing personal account
If you already use a personal account on Pinterest, you don’t need to start form zero. You can simply convert your personal account to a business account and keep all your existing Pins and boards.
To convert your account:
- Open your Pinterest account settings.
- Select Account Settings and click Change Account.
- Follow the instructions to convert your account to a business account.

Pinterest Business Account vs Personal Account (and when each one makes sense).

If you plan to keep personal content completely separate from client-facing or professional content, using more than one account may help. You can create multiple business accounts, as long as each is tied to its own unique email address. It is possible to log in to multiple accounts and toggle between them.
Step 2: Customize Your Profile Details
A polished designed profile is the heart of your Pinterest presence and essential. It sets the tone for your brand and helps users instantly understand what you offer. A well-structured and engaging profile builds trust, strengthens your brand, and makes it easier for your audience to identify with your content.

Username and profile name
Your username appears in your profile URL. Keep it simple, memorable, and aligned with your brand name if possible.
Your profile name, displayed at the top of your account, gives you room to add descriptive keywords (e.g., “Sustainable Home Décor | DIY Inspiration”), helping your profile show up in searches.

Description
Your profile description should clearly explain:
- What you do
- Who you help
- What type of content users will find
Use relevant keywords that help Pinterest categorize your business and boost discoverability.
Profile Photo
Use your logo if you’re setting up a business brand, or a clean professional portrait if you represent yourself. Choose an image that looks sharp and recognizable even in small sizes.
Header Image
Your profile header is the large banner at the top of your page. It immediately catches the eye to the user. Here you can include an image that visually represents your brand, such as a mood board, product image, or creative collage.

Step 3: Verify Your Website
Verifying your website is a crucial step in getting the most out of your Pinterest Business Account. It confirms to Pinterest that you own your website’s domain and unlocks additional features for you. These include detailed analytics that show you which content is performing particularly well, and increased visibility for your Pins.
Why is website verification important?
- Advanced analytics
Once verified, you’ll see which Pins bring traffic to your website and how users interact with your content. - More visibility
Verified domains appear more trustworthy and perform better across Pinterest. - Brand recognition
Your domain shows up on your Pins, strengthening your branding.
How to Verify Your Website
Verification is simple and takes just a few steps:
- Go to your Business Account Settings.
- Open Claimed Accounts or Website Verification.
- Choose one of Pinterest’s verification methods:
- Add an HTML tag to your site’s header
- Upload a file to your server
- Click Verify on Pinterest. The confirmation usually takes only a few minutes.
If HTML sounds intimidating, don’t worry—it’s much easier than it seems. The exact steps depend on:
- Your website platform (WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace, etc.)
- Your theme
- Your hosting provider
Most platforms have detailed guides, and you can always check your host’s support documentation for help. And remember: it’s often less complicated than it sounds at first.
Step 4: Create and set up boards
Boards are the backbone of your Pinterest strategy. They help you organize your content and make it easier for users to discover what they’re looking for. With well-structured boards and the use of the right keywords, you not only ensure clarity, but also improve the findability of your content.

How to set up your first boards
- Choose a clear topic:
Select themes that align with your content and audience (e.g. “Sustainable DIY Projects”, “Easy Vegan Recipes” or “Pinterest for Beginners”). - Name your boards strategically
Use titles that are short and concise, but also contain important keywords. Instead of “inspirations”, “Sustainable gift ideas for Christmas” would be more meaningful. - Write a board description
Every board should have a description that summarizes the topic. The goal is to give the user and Pinterest clarity. Use relevant keywords to increase your reach. - Select a board cover
You can use for your board cover any pin you saved on that board. I like to use a cohesive, branded visual. This way the board overview is not visually cluttered.
As with any website, things are always changing on Pinterest. For example, I can no longer create board covers on some profiles that I maintain. On other, mainly older profiles, however, I can. This is quite normal – besides: Board covers are more of a nice-to-have than a must anyway.
Boards for converted business accounts
If you’ve converted an existing profile into a business account, there may already be some boards. Take a look to see which ones are truly relevant. You can either archive irrelevant ones (usually the better choice) or delete them.
Update the remaining boards using the steps above for creating a new board.
